Vernonia fasciculata

Common name: Common Ironweed

Native plant

Ironweed has dark purple flowers that occur in terminal, compact inflorescence.  It blooms late summer to early fall, offering great compliment to the yellows of goldenrods.  Ironweed is a tall, upright plant that rarely requires staking, and as such is great used along fence lines and in the back of gardens.  Can tolerate flooding from time to time.
