Verbena hastata

Common name: Blue Vervain

Native plant

Blue Vervain is a common plant in Illinois, enjoying wet muck and even some standing water from time to time.  Blooms occur in late summer and last one to one and a half months.  Flower spikes occur in terminal panicles and bloom from bottom to top.  Flowers attract a whole range of bees, butterflies and other pollinators.  Plants can spread by both rhizomes and seed, especially under ideal conditions.
