Vaccinium pallidum
Common name: Hillside Blueberry
Vaccinium pallidum is a lovely, low shrub that you can harvest tasty blue morsels from on sandy soils in oak shade to full sun. The leaves tend to be dark green above and pale underneath for much of the year and turn a bright red in the fall. In lighter shade the red can be quite brilliant. While it is found on similar habitat as early low blueberry, it can stand more disturbed soils and more sun. Interestly, these two species do sometimes hybridizes where they share sites. Like other blueberries they can stand fire to a certain extent but flower and set fruit on two year old stems, so if you're a burner then maybe step it back a bit around them. As with other blueberries sandier, more acidic soils are best.
