Symphyotrichum sericeum

Common name: Silky Aster

Native plant

Silky Aster is a shorter aster with silky, silvery leaves that offer a unique addition to the landscape. Flowerheads are light purple and over an inch in diameter. As with most asters, it blooms late summer to early fall, lasts for about 1 month, and attracts a wide range of bees, butterflies and other pollinators looking for their last bit of nectar and pollen for the season.  This plant can be challenging to grow and does not compete well with other vegetation.  Excessive moisture can cause rot and downy mildew on the leaves.  Best grown in dry, full sun areas.
