Sassafras albidum
Common name: Sassafras
The mitten, ghost, and football-shaped leaves are a Sassafras tree’s trademark. Tea, candy, and root beer are made from its aromatic leaves and roots. Excellent fall color of yellow, orange and red. Prefers full sun and good garden soil. The brown bark is deeply furrowed and ridged. Sassafras does sucker, but I have not seen much of a problem with this in my 15-year-old trees.
