Sassafras albidum
Common name: Sassafras
Sassafras is a mid-sized tree with excellent fall color of yellow, orange and red. The mitten, ghost, and football-shaped leaves are this tree’s trademark. The brown bark is deeply furrowed and ridged. It prefers full sun and good garden soil. Sassafras does sucker, but less so in garden settings than in the wild. Tea, candy, and root beer are made from its aromatic leaves and roots.
