Ruellia strepens

Common name: Smooth Petunia

Native plant

Smooth Petunia has large purple blooms that occur in the leaf axils of the plant.  Make sure to pay attention, though!  Each flower only lasts about a day.  Blooming period occurs during the height of summer for 2 to 3 months. This plant prefers some shade and will often suffer from leaf scorching if placed in full sun. Seeds are produced in pods that explode when ripe, projecting seeds outward, and causing this plant to move around a bit in the garden by reseeding.  This can be prevented by removing seed pods.
