Prunus pumila
Common name: Sand Cherry
Sand Cherry is found almost strictly in sandy soils around Lake Michigan and the sand prairies around northern Illinois and Indiana. It flowers early in May in bunches along the stems. When it leafs out, the leaves are held at sharp angles, quill-like, giving it a very unique appearance. The fruit are not what we’d call edible, but song birds do seem to go for them.
