Pontederia cordata

Common name: Pickerelweed

Native plant

Pickerelweed is a true emergent species, preferring sites of standing water or constant wet muck.  It is a large, showy plant with shiny, arrowhead shaped leaves and flowering spikes up to 5 inches long.  Flowering occurs in late summer, and a colony of plants can continue to flower for up to 4 months. Plants will spread by rhizomes, often covering large surfaces of water.  Flowers are visited by a range of bees, and seeds are a favorite treat of ducks.
