Magnolia macrophylla
Common name: Big Leaf Magnolia
Big Leaf Magnolia has one of the most fitting names in the plant world. The leaves are truly monstrous with sizes ranging from 24 to as long as 40 inches and at least 12 inches wide. The large leaves hide a somewhat graceful branching pattern and smooth gray and silver bark. This is a southern species requiring some protection, but hardiness does not seem to be a problem in our area. The flowers match the leaves in their proportion: they’re huge, some in the range of 8 to 12 inches across. They are silky white and produce large round seed pods later in the season. A very nice, unique addition to any gardener’s yard.
