Liatris scariosa
Common name: Savanna Blazing Star
Like other Liatris species, Savanna Blazing Star has a tall central stalk that terminates in a raceme up to 18" long that flowers from top to bottom. Individual flowers are purple and about 1 inch across, slightly larger than other Liatris flowers. Blooms occur late summer to mid fall and last a month to a month and a half. The leaves of are slightly broader than other Liatris species and are rough to the touch. This plant may require some staking, especially if placed in part sun conditions. The corms are a favorite treat of voles and other small mammals and are frequently dug up and eaten over winter.
