Liatris aspera

Common name: Rough Blazing Star

Native plant

Rough Blazing Star has lance-shaped basal leaves and a single flowering stalk.  Along the length of the flowering stalk are 1 inch purple flowers with long, curly styles.  Flowers bloom from top to bottom from late summer to early fall, the entire bloom period lasting about 3 weeks. Flowers attract a variety of bees and butterflies and even see the occasional visit from a hummingbird.  Corms are a tasty treat for small mammals, and will often be dug up and eaten, particularly in winter.
