Iris virginica var. shrevei

Common name: Blue Flag Iris

Native plant

Blue Flag Iris is a fast growing, water-loving species.  Showy purple flowers with yellow streaks bloom from late spring to early summer.  Although each individual flower is short lived, a colony can bloom for as long as a month.  Because they are so fast growing, they benefit from divisions every 3-4 years.  If left alone, this plant frequently forms colonies, particularly in wet areas.  Although they can grow in part shade, they often will only bloom under full sun conditions.
