Helianthus mollis
Common name: Downy Sunflower
Large yellow flowers of Downy Sunflower bloom late summer to early fall and give a spectacular show for up to two months. Does well under poor soil conditions. A great choice for the hands-off gardener as extra watering and fertilizing will cause the plant to fall over when in bloom. Plant does move around, forming colonies, and as such is best used in more informal gardens and landscapes. Flowers are a great attractor of a range of different pollinators, and seed heads are an excellent winter food source for birds.
