Hamamelis vernalis
Common name: Vernal Witchhazel
The Vernal Witch Hazel plant is in every way similar to our Common Witch Hazel except in bloom. Vernal Witch Hazel blooms during the vernal equinox, March 21, with blooms of a beautiful orange to red. It appreciates a moist loamy or sandy soil, but is also very tolerant of rocky soils, poor or clay soils and soils of various pH. Tends to sucker, forming tight colonies, but can be kept pruned. It is native to the southern part of the state.
