Franklinia alatamaha

Common name: Franklin Tree

Non-native plant

Franklinea alatamaha has been extirpated from the wild for more than 100 years--at least no one has been able to find it. Native much further south, but hardy here as long as it is not exposed to the north or west, a nice eastern exposure is best. The lustrous dark green foliage holds late into early winter and turns a rich orange, red and purple for fall. The fragrant, striking white flowers with yellow centers open in August. Requires rich, moist, acidic and well-drained soil in full sun.
