Fragaria virginiana

Common name: Wild Strawberry

Native plant

Wild Strawberries will grow pretty much anywhere- just make sure you are looking to fill in some space!  It is an excellent ground cover with attractive foliage and abundant flowers.  Although slightly smaller and a bit less sweet than typical market strawberries, the fruit of this plant is still quite delicious.  Extra watering during active growing periods in spring and early summer will increase chances of fruit set.  The flowers attract a wide range of butterflies, moths, bees and other pollinators, and the fruit is a food source for many birds, squirrels, rabbits, and even turtles!
