Dasiphora fruticosa

Years ago you would have seen this bright spot of yellow in nearly ever type of planting throughout the midwest. Many types were trotted out for public consumption, and in the span of fifteen years all but disappeared from regular use. All because of soil. In the wild, it tends to be a  little shrub you might find in in fens or along sandy ponds or gravel out-wash with lots of moisture, not in the compacted nightmare that are parking lots and row houses. But all is not lost for those who wish to add its happy flowers to their gardens. Look for loamy spots that are well drained and can be watered regularly. Though rare in the wilds of Illinois, it grows well throughout the region if you can match its needs. If you can do that, then you'll have a small flowering shrub that will bloom off and on all summer and is loved by local bees for the same reason you'll love it, those sublimely yellow little flowers.
