Ceanothus herbaceous
Common name: Redroot
Smaller, slimmer and shinier than New Jersey Tea, Redroot is no less a beauty. Tends to flower earlier and is more commonly found on rocky sites and sandier soils than its cousin. We have planted it on several sites around the area and found that it likes to run along the ground somewhat, not really forming an upright shrub. We have also noticed that it seems to handle a bit of shade and still grows quite well. Like Ceanothus americanus, it fixes nitrogen in the soil, and a red dye can be produced from its roots, hence its name.
