Carya lacinosa
Common name: Kingnut
The largest nuts in the Carya genus for Illinois are produced by this tree, and they taste great too. Growing on flood-plains and moist areas throughout its range, we’ve seen it growing in the wild as far north as Batavia, Illinois. Kingnut can get very large, but it may take a little time to get to that size because of its modest growth rate. We’ve seen them planted in yards and gardens, not to mention in the wild, and it makes a heck of a shade tree.
