Bromus kalmii
Common name: Prairie Brome
Prairie Brome is one of those grasses that does it job in the prairie quietly and lets the fanfare go to its more gaudy neighbors. Not to say that this plant is not graceful in it own right. It is, but it is more of a foundation plant on which the prairie is built. That being said, Prairie Brome is a fairly tough plant being able to take more shade than most prairie grasses growing on most soils types very well. The seed heads are distantly reminiscent of cultivated oats.
