Bouteloua curtipendula
Common name: Side-Oats Grama
Looking for an attractive grass to grow on a dry, exposed site with average soil? Side-oats will grow there and then take it over with grace. One of our favorite grasses and one that is often overlooked by gardeners because it is thought of as a waste ground plant, but it is far from that. The flowers/seed heads hang lightly all to one side of the stem and will have bright orange-red filaments that are visited by tiny pollen hunters when in flower. In the fall, it turns a light golden color that I think glows in fading light of the day.
