Betula papyrifera
Common name: Paper Birch
The Paper Birch is truly one of the most spectacular white bark trees of our native flora. The tree is a native from the south side of Lake Michigan and goes to the tundra. It prefers cool summers and mesic soil. Bronze Birch Bore will destroy the tree if its environmental conditions are not met. Most of our urban areas are not suitable to grow Paper Birch. The only urban area that can successfully grow Paper Birch is very near Lake Michigan where some native stands still exist.
