Acer saccharum
Common name: Sugar Maple
Sugar Maple is best known for its yellow, orange and occasionally red fall color. It is a very site specific plant, and does best in the shade with good, well-drained, moist garden soil. This tree is not suited for new subdivisions or street tree plantings. However, it is an excellent tree to plant in the shade of others (Elms) in older subdivisions (>25 years). Plus, February and March are maple syrup time. Forty quarts of sap are needed for one quart of maple syrup!
