Abies balsamea
Common name: Balsam Fir
Much more of a northern species, this tree is native to central Wisconsin but not truly native to Illinois. Happiest when planted in the areas that hold water or at the very least remain moist after rains. Do not plant it in heavier clay soils if you're looking for long term growth. We've seen it planted in all sorts of "evergreen" situations with very limited success. The flowering cones appear in late spring and tend to be purple-ish in color at first and fade to brown later on.
