Possibility Place Nursery is a family-owned and operated farm in Monee, IL specializing in growing tree, shrub and perennial ecotypes native to our region. We grow native plants to help communities and individuals increase biodiversity and improve ecological function of their natural spaces, from vast wild areas to small back yards. We are an environmentally conscious, ecologically minded company looking to do our part to contribute to habitat restoration, and help fight climate change one plant at a time. We are currently looking to fill the following position:

Field Manager 


Possibility Place Nursery is seeking an experienced nursery manager to run field and container operations for an 80-acre native plant nursery. Responsibilities include inventory management, harvesting and fulfilling orders, and running a small field crew for production and harvest.


Field Manager Job Description


  • Manage a crew of 2-4 staff members in all facets of plant production

  • Participate in all aspects of production including potting and digging trees

  • Coordinate order fulfillment schedule with office staff and confirm shipment, delivery, or pick-up details

  • Identify plants as well as problems such as diseases, weeds, and insect pests

  • Tour work areas to observe work being done, inspect crops, and evaluate plant and soil conditions

  • Assign work schedules and duties to nursery or greenhouse staff and supervise their work

  • Determine plant growing conditions in greenhouses and container fields and set planting and care schedules

  • Apply pesticides and fertilizers to plants with strict adherence to instructions and regulations

  • Manage records of chemical applications

  • Train employees in planting techniques

  • Explain and enforce safety regulations and policies

  • Position and regulate irrigation systems and program control computers

  • Inspect facilities and equipment for signs of disrepair and perform necessary maintenance work

  • Prepare soil for planting; plant seeds, and transplant containerized crop

  • Cut and prune trees, shrubs, and perennials as needed

  • Provide information to customers on the care of trees, shrubs, and perennials

  • Construct structures and accessories such as greenhouses and benches

  • Monitor and manage plant cultural requirements, water, pruning, fertility and IPM programs

  • Maintain regular production and inventory records using computerized database

  • Interview and hire seasonal staff as needed

  • Perform other duties as needed to ensure plant production quality

Physical Demands:

  • Stand and walk continuously on muddy, wet, uneven, and/ or slippery surfaces

  • Sit occasionally to operate equipment or complete office work

  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently and 75 pounds rarely

  • Bend, twist, stoop, or crouch frequently

  • Kneel and crawl occasionally


  • 2 years horticultural management experience in nursery growing and supervision

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Desire to work with your hands in a fast paced, dirty environment while learning about the beautiful native plants in our area

  • Ability to work productively and independently, as well as supervise and work as part of a team

  • Illinois Pesticide Applicator’s License, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, required

  • Experience operating small equipment, such as skid steers and tractors, highly preferred
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing, verbally, and with non-native speakers. Spanish is beneficial.

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel)

  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record and reliable transportation

  • Availability to work some weekends and holidays
