Smooth Sumac Rhus glabraGreat for drier sites and as a thicket. It has a underrated flower, butterflies love it. The best tall sumac for heavy clay soils. It consistently has great red fall color. Prefers a high and dry site. Will not grow in a marsh, so chances are if you see sumac in a marsh DO NOT TOUCH!! It is probably poison sumac! Smooth Sumac does tend to sucker, making it ideal for berm and new construction sites where screening is needed.
