Spicebush Lindera benzoinYellow flowers in the spring, red fruit in the fall. A moist wooded site produces the best growth. Another very shade tolerant shrub found in mesic woods. The small yellow flower blooms in early April before the plant leafs out. Leaf and stem have a very aromatic lemon fragrance when crushed. Fall color is an unbelievable yellow. Fruit, which is 1 2 inch long, is a beautiful scarlet in the fall. The pioneers used the fruit as a spice, hence its name.
