Carolina Allspice Calycanthus floridusOf all the native shrubs I have seen, Ihave seen this one only in the garden and never in the wild. In mid-May the flowers open with a maroon flurish and sweet strawberry scent, which is strongest in the evenings. The flowers and leaves of this plant are used in potpourri and placed in drawers among cloths. The fruit resembles a corn husk and remains on the plant well into winter. Fall color is a quite yellow. Allspice requires a protected spot in half day sun and in good garden soil.
