Red Elderberry Sambucus pubensRed version of canadensis, and just as durable. A plant of the moist woodland edge. The white flowers are similar to common elderberry but bloom several weeks earlier. The fruit is a brilliant tomato-red color and is relished by the birds. I have often wondered why we don’t use more elderberry in our landscapes, especially in shrub borders. The stems are hollow and make wonderful whistles or blow guns.
