Juneberry
Amelanchier interior

A shorter version of Amelanchier arboria. This Juneberry is in taxonomical never never land. A number of knowledgeable people including myself viewed this plant in the wild and believed it to be a dwarf of 5-7 feet. It turns out to be a dwarf due to its location on a sand dune. The trees in our yard are approximately 20 feet. This tree blooms slightly after Amelanchier arborea and has excellent fruit. Fall color is yellow, orange, and red. The plant does well in full to partial sun on well drained sites. No Juneberry likes to be planted on poorly drained sites. Juneberry is one of a small list of mid-sized trees that do well on dry lightly shaded sites. Please consult Plants of Chicago Regon by Swink and Wilhelm for explanation of the confusing Amelanchiers.
