Flowering Dogwood
Cornus florida

Most of us know the flowers, they seem to shine as they set on the branches seemingly forever through the spring. Making them one of the most picturesque, woodland trees in the Chicagoland area. Please note however that this plant is not for every yard or garden. It needs a drier, well-drained soil with protection from the west, and in ideal conditions light shade over-head. Those of you with sandy or even gravel type soils rejoice. I have seen this plant reach heights of more than 40 feet and really put on a flower display, but it pales in comparison to the fall color, a tower of flame red and purple!
