Persimon Diospyros virginianaVery hard wood and female plants produce large amounts fruit. Persimmon is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are found on separate trees. Therefore, you must have both trees to have fruit. As we raise our plants from seed, we are unable to determine sex until the fourth year. The yellow-orange fruit is edible in the fall, and when ripe it is truly delicious. Caution: the mouth-puckering unripened fruit will be an experience you will never forget. Persimmon is moderate in growth, tolerates light shade but prefers full sun, and likes good garden soil. Yellow fall color. The bark on mature trees is brown/black, broken into beautiful scale-like blocks.
