Mockernut
Carya tomentosa

Big fooler, shells are big but the fruit is small. Mockernut differs from shagbark in that it has seven leaflets per leaf versus 5 leaflets per leaf on shagbark. Mockernut grows on well-drained sites in full sun or light shade. Siting hickories in light shade seems to increase growth two fold over growing them in full sun. Mockernut grows faster than shagbark, but slower than bitternut. Bitternut grows slower than most of our other trees. This hickory seems to have the best yellow fall color of the hickories. The name mockernut refers to its having a large nut, but very little nut meat.
