Shagbark Hickory Carya ovataBark plates peel away from the trunk. Slow grower if not in shade. One of the best tasting nuts around if you can figure out how to get it out of the shell and beat the squirrels to it. The more I observe and read, the more I believe this tree really likes shade for about half a day or slightly more. Occasionally, as well as unfortunately, a mulberry will grow in the root bag with a Shagbark. Those Shagbark tend to be twice the size of the rest of the ones in the row! Very slow-growing initially. In 6 years, ours have grown 3 feet. The shaggy bark does not appear for a number of years (15-20?). Does well in full sun on mesic to dry soil. Fall color is a nice yellow.
