American Linden Tilia americanaVery tough plant with soft, heart-shaped leaves. Tilia's fragrant flowers not only increase this plant's landscape value, but also make an outstanding tea. Linden, or basswood as it is more commonly called, tends to sucker from its base creating a multi-stemmed plant. Its leaves are rather large, about the size of your hand, and very soft to the touch with a very agreeable light yellow fall color. Tolerates some shade but does best in full sun and in mesic soils. Linden is highly sought after by wood carvers.
